Yes, you can. The 2nd Amendment was written so the people could protect themselves from their government!

A protest, jointly organized by the Otero Tea Party Patriots, the newly formed Alamogordo Second Amendment Task Force and the Sons of Liberty Riders, a national motorcycle rights group that also "fights overbearing government intervention," will be conducted from 1 to 3 p.m. Saturday at the corner of 10th Street and White Sands Boulevard.
Because of the Second Amendment Task Force's involvement, protesters are being encouraged to bring a gun to demonstrate their ability to open carry. It's legal to openly carry a firearm in New Mexico by anyone over the age of 19. A person can openly carry in most places, except in a bar, jail or prison, a school and other places.
"They mentioned carrying firearms (at the protest) and I told them to make sure to put it on the application," Stern said. "Otherwise, people will be calling DPS and (officers) will fly out there with their guns drawn."

I doubt the Almagordo police will "fly out there and pull guns" on open carriers - they just settled a lawsuit for that kind of unlawful police behavior with another open carrier - see http://www.examiner.com/x-2782-DC-Gun-Rights-Examiner~y2009m9d9-Federal-judge-rules-police-cannot-detain-people-for-openly-carrying-guns & http://www.examiner.com/x-2782-DC-Gun-Rights-Examiner~y2009m9d29-Alamogordo-police-pay-21000-to-settle-open-carry-lawsuit
Thank you for alerting me to this Mr. Stollenwerk.
