Al-Qaida Backs ?? as Next President

The message, posted Monday on the password-protected al-Hesbah Web site, said if al-Qaida wants to exhaust the United States militarily and economically, "impetuous" Republican presidential candidate Sen. John McCain is the better choice because he is more likely to continue the wars in Iraq and Afghanistan.

"This requires presence of an impetuous American leader such as McCain, who pledged to continue the war till the last American soldier," the message said. "Then, al-Qaida will have to support McCain in the coming elections so that he continues the failing march of his predecessor, Bush."

"If al-Qaida carries out a big operation against American interests," the message said, "this act will be support of McCain because it will push the Americans deliberately to vote for McCain so that he takes revenge for them against al-Qaida. Al-Qaida then will succeed in exhausting America till its last year in it."

ACLU: 2/3 of US population lives in "Constitution-free" zone

By Jon Stokes
| Published: October 23, 2008 - 09:45PM CT

In the intervening years, the ACLU has been collecting other reports of such inland "border" checkpoints, and has built its new "Constitution-Free Zone" campaign around them. Unfortunately for the ACLU, few of the folks who have been subject to search at such checkpoints have actually come forward with complaints, but the ones who did speak up have compelling and troubling stories.

Peppard, a member of the ACLU, refused the search, at which point he was questioned repeatedly, and eventually escorted from his car while the agents searched it. Segments of Peppard's account of the incident, which the ACLU has posted in video form on their site, would almost be funny if the issue weren't so serious.

one wonders just how far the Feds will push this internal checkpoint

it would make sense to let bygones be bygones. He is not. He has no vision, no plan, and has resorted to fear and smear tactics. He does not deserve to rest on his hero image as a substitute for lack of any other reason to earn support. There are so many people who mistakenly think a vote for McCain is patriotic and means traditional American values.

Thank you each too, for your service and sacrifices.

Yesterday news came about a young husband in our area, dead of injuries in Iraq. I'm absolutely heartsick, can't sleep. As Barrack Obama said, no soldier's death for his country is in vain. On the same night, McCain said we have to KEEP sending our servicepeople, that if we say Iraq was a mistake we dishonor the memories of those precious ones who've been lost.  God bless this soldier for doing his duty, and God bless his family, may they have peace and comfort ... but how will more deaths honor him, "win" or lose.

I Have Learned...

I HAVE LEARNED that sometimes when I'm angry I have the right to be angry, but that doesn't give me the right to be cruel.

I HAVE LEARNED that it's hard to determine where to draw the line between being nice and not hurting people's feelings and standing up for what you believe.

I HAVE LEARNED that money is a lousy way of keeping score.

I HAVE LEARNED that sometimes when my friends fight, I'm forced to choose sides even when I don't want to.

I HAVE LEARNED that if you want to cheer yourself up, you should try cheering someone else up.

I HAVE LEARNED that it's taking me a long time to become the person I want to be.

I HAVE LEARNED, reading what people write on desks (or clips) can teach you a lot.

I picked some, that were relevant to me. There are many more at the source. Oh, and last but not least;

I HAVE LEARNED never try to baptize a cat.

And I have photo evidence to prove it.. .

I have Learned

I HAVE LEARNED that no matter how much I care, some people just don't care back.
I HAVE LEARNED that just because someone doesn't love you the way you want them to doesn't mean they don't love you with all they have.
I HAVE LEARNED that maturity has more to do with what types of experiences you've had and what you've learned from them and less to do with how many birthdays you've celebrated.
I HAVE LEARNED that our background and circumstances may have influenced who we are, but we are responsible for who we become.
I HAVE LEARNED that two people can look at the exact same thing and see something totally differently.
I HAVE LEARNED that no matter the consequences, those who are honest with themselves get farther in life.
I HAVE LEARNED that either you control your attitude or it controls you.
I HAVE LEARNED that you can keep going long after you think you can't.
I HAVE LEARNED that learning to forgive takes practice.

What have you Learned?.

Digitizing Books One Word at a Time

The words above come from scanned books.
By typing them, you help to digitize old texts.

clipped from recaptcha.net

reCAPTCHA is a free CAPTCHA service that helps to digitize books.

About 60 million CAPTCHAs are solved by humans around the world every day. In each case, roughly ten seconds of human time are being spent.
Individually, that's not a lot of time, but in aggregate these little puzzles consume more than 150,000 hours of work each day. What if we could make
positive use of this human effort? reCAPTCHA does exactly that by channeling the effort spent solving CAPTCHAs online into "reading" books.

Example of OCR errors
reCAPTCHA improves the process of digitizing books by sending words that cannot be read by computers to the Web in the form of
CAPTCHAs for humans to decipher. More specifically, each word that cannot be read correctly by OCR is placed on an image and used as a CAPTCHA.

Chicagoan Assaulted While Canvassing for Obama

worthy of a full read, not just clippings.

Nancy Takehara, the Chicagoan who was assaulted while canvassing for Obama in Caledonia, Wisconsin, was contacted by the candidate himself on the day of the incident. By the time Takehara had returned home, there was an answering machine message from the campaign. She called the number and Obama spoke to her personally with words of moral support. Takehara said this morning, "All I have to say is Mr. Obama is a wonderful man" who was very supportive.

On Saturday, Takehara was going door to door in Caledonia with another canvasser when she was verbally assaulted and then grabbed by the hair on the back of her neck and reportedly pounded on the head. (Watch a news report here.)

The Obama campaign's statement on the matter was very polite, calling the incident "isolated and extremely rare."
I have decided to fall in line with the general sentiment of the Obama camp that the high road ought to be the one taken in response to such lashing out by McCain/Palin supporters.

McCain's Pants Are On Fire

This was in my devotional reading today so I guess I was a little sensitive to detecting liars.

Prov 26:23-28
23 Like an earthen vessel overlaid with silver dross
Are burning lips and a wicked heart.
24 He who hates disguises it with his lips,
But he lays up deceit in his heart.
25 When he speaks graciously, do not believe him,
For there are seven abominations in his heart.
26 Though his hatred covers itself with guile,
His wickedness will be revealed before the assembly.
27 He who digs a pit will fall into it,
And he who rolls a stone, it will come back on him.
28 A lying tongue hates those it crushes,
And a flattering mouth works ruin.
NASU

On "Fox News Sunday," John McCain defended his use of nasty robocalls against Obama, telling host Chris Wallace that the calls are nothing like the ones used against him in the South Carolina 2000 primary. (In fact, McCain appears to be using the same firm as that smear campaign.) Asked if, in response to bipartisan condemnation, McCain would stop the calls, he replied, "Of course not."

WALLACE: And you said the following: "I promise you I have never and will never have anything to do with that kind of political tactic." Now you've hired the same guy who did the robocalls against you to, reportedly, to do the robocalls against Obama and the Republican Senator Susan Collins, the co-chair of your campaign in Maine, has asked you to stop the robocalls. Will you do that?

MCCAIN: Of course not.

Voters Said They Were Duped Into Registering As Republicans

SACRAMENTO --
The owner of a firm that the California Republican Party hired to register tens of thousands of voters this year was arrested in Ontario over the weekend on suspicion of voter registration fraud.
Prayer in the service of politics

Jacoby's arrest by state investigators and the Ontario Police Department late Saturday came after dozens of voters said they were duped into registering as Republicans by people employed by YPM. The voters said YPM workers tricked them by saying they were signing a petition to toughen penalties against child molesters.

The firm was paid $7 to $12 for every Californian it registered as a member of the GOP.

Several dozen voters recently told The Times that YPM workers said they had to become Republicans to sign the petition, contrary to California initiative law. Other voters said they had no idea their registration was being changed.
YPM has been accused of using bait-and-switch tactics across the country.

Gop Strategy: Our Election Wins Increase As # Voters Decrease

There is a video clip of his speech within this short YouTube video.
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=KdNgMKPV9xQ
Paul Weyrich, Father of the Reagan Revolution, Founding Father of the Social Conservative Movement, co-founder of the Heritage Foundation and the Free Congress Foundation speaking in a church to Republican activists (and probably not knowing he was being recorded) said this:

How many of our Christians have what I call the goo-goo syndrome? Good government.

They want everybody to vote!

I don't want everybody to vote. Elections are not won by a majority of people, they never have been from the beginning of our country and they are not now.

As a matter of fact, our leverage in the elections quite candidly goes up as voting populace goes down.

On edit: The GOP has been carrying out Weyrich's strategy in every election since Reagan, Rove has been a leader in the effort as has Tom Delay. The GOP has now passed laws across the country to take control of voter rolls which resulted in the theft of two Presidential elections:

Thousands of African Americans were disenfranchised in Florida

MI Republicans Admit to Illegal Foreclosure Scheme, “Surrender” to Democrats

By: emptywheel Monday October 20, 2008 8:53 am
Democrats and Republicans have settled the suit seeking to prevent Michigan Republicans from using foreclosure lists to challenge voters.

Here's Michigan Democratic Party Chair Mark Brewer on the settlement:

Today's settlement protects the voting rights of all Michigan citizens and guarantees that Republicans cannot use foreclosure lists to deny or challenge anyone's right to vote. It is no surprise the Republicans back pedaled when their illegal scheme was revealed, and their surrender today ensures that Republicans cannot take advantage of the economic crisis to deny anyone's voting rights. The agreement is a win for Michigan families ready to vote for change, and we will continue to aggressively protect everyone's right to vote. [my emphasis]

WASHINGTON — An ACORN community organizer received a death threat and the liberal activist group's Boston and Seattle offices were vandalized Thursday, reflecting mounting tensions over its role in registering 1.3 million mostly poor and minority Americans to vote next month.

Republicans, including presidential candidate John McCain, have verbally attacked the group repeatedly in recent days, alleging a widespread vote-fraud scheme, although they've provided little proof.
a senior ACORN staffer in Cleveland, after appearing on television this week, got an e-mail that said she "is going to have her life ended."

A female staffer in Providence, R.I., got a threatening call from someone who said words to the effect of "We know you get off work at 9," then uttered racial epithets, he said.

“The Bank is trying to kill me, but I will kill it.”
– President Andrew Jackson

President Andrew Jackson of Tennessee was the 7th President of the United States. Jackson’s efforts to shut down the central bank were believed to have resulted in an attempt on his life. After he recovered from the assassination attempt, Jackson redoubled his efforts to shut down the central bank and was successful.

The Second Bank of the United States was authorized for a twenty year period during James Madison’s tenure in 1816. As President, Jackson worked to rescind the bank’s federal charter. In Jackson’s veto message the bank needed to be abolished because:

  • It concentrated the nation’s financial strength in a single institution.
  • It exposed the government to control by foreign interests.
  • It served mainly to make the rich richer.
  • It exercised too much control over members of Congress.
  • It favored northeastern states over southern and western states.

5 Mistakes To Avoid In A Bear Market Friday October 17, 11:15 am ET

    clipped from biz.yahoo.com

When the time is right, you need to be ready to ACT NOT REACT. Here are a few tips that will help you make the right decisions:

    1) You don't drive looking in the rear view mirror, why invest that way?
Don't become a performance chaser. The notion of a fund or ETF continuing to go up just because it's been up in the past is flawed.
    2) Don't get fooled by sucker rallies
Japan experienced a handful of 30%+ counter trend rallies
which resulted in eventual lower lows.
    3) Know your numbers
if you've lost 40% you need to pocket a 66% gain just to get even.
    4) Don't fight the tape
A look at the Dow Jones and S&P 500 charts clearly shows that investors don't want to own stocks right now.
    5) Use common sense
Unfortunately, common sense is not so common. You can't force a winning portfolio. All boats sink with the tide. If you don't want your boat to sink, pull it on shore and wait for the tide to come back. You can park your money in short term Treasuries,
